The Nikon Z 105mm f/2.8 VR S is a true 1:1 macro lens that punches way above typical “detail shot” glass. It’s razor sharp edge-to-edge, with zero weird falloff, and the compression at 105mm gives you a clean, premium look for product, beauty, and tight inserts. The VR stabilization is legit for handheld work, especially if you’re creeping into macro territory without rails.
Where this lens really earns its keep is versatility. It’s not just a macro lens, you can turn around and use it for portraits, interviews, or stylized B-roll with a really polished falloff. The bokeh is smooth, highlights don’t get crunchy, and skin tones hold up well. Autofocus is fast and reliable if you’re running hybrid or solo, but it also plays nicely for controlled manual work.
If you need precision detail, textures, materials, product features, this is the lens. If you want that same shot to still feel cinematic and not clinical, this is also the lens.
Notes From The Owner
If you’re shooting product, this is the safest “no surprises” macro you can grab. It’s clinically sharp without feeling sterile, and the stabilization actually makes handheld detail work usable. I reach for this when I need texture to read clean but still feel premium on camera.
Common questions about lenses and our rental terms. Still have a question? Email us below.
What lens mount is this?
Check the Specifications section on this page for the exact mount (PL, RF, E, Z, F, M, etc.). If you need an adapter, we stock the common ones: PL-to-E, LPL-to-PL, and a few others. Just ask.
Is the lens tested for backfocus and collimation?
Yes. Cinema lenses are collimation-checked before every rental and shimmed if needed. Photo and hybrid lenses are function-tested for AF, stabilization, and aperture control.
What filter thread does this lens take?
Check Specifications for the exact front filter thread. We stock NiSi True Color Variable NDs in the common sizes as add-ons: browse the Filters category or ask us about a specific size.
Do you rent matched lens sets?
Yes. Several matched cinema prime sets and zoom pairs are available. Look for set listings in the Lens category, or ask us if you need a custom matched combo.
Are lens supports and lens tape included?
Long heavy lenses include a support bracket when shipped. Lens tape and cleaning kits are included with every rental. If you need 15mm or 19mm rods for your rig, those live in Camera Support.
How long can I rent for?
One day up to a week or longer. Rental pricing tiers are shown in the Rental Tiers section on this page. Pickup is after 2 PM on the first day and return is by 11 AM on the last day. A weekend rental (Friday afternoon to Monday morning) counts as one rental day.
Do you deliver, or is it pickup only?
Both. GLM is based in Rockwall (far east side of DFW) and pickup at our location is free. Delivery is available across the Metroplex at published round-trip rates: Zone 1 East DFW (Rockwall, Rowlett, Mesquite, Garland) is $50. Zone 2 Dallas Metro (Dallas, Plano, McKinney, Addison) is $125. Zone 3 Central and West DFW (Irving, Grapevine, Denton, Frisco) is $200. Zone 4 Fort Worth and beyond (Fort Worth, Arlington, Mansfield) is $300. Rush same-day delivery adds $100; after-hours adds $75. West of Fort Worth or outside DFW is quoted case by case. You pick your zone at the quote review step and the fee is added to your total automatically, no separate email needed. Full rate table is on the Rental Terms page.
Do I need insurance?
A Certificate of Insurance (COI) listing Geared Like A Machine LLC as additionally insured is required for any rental where total replacement value exceeds $5,000. For smaller rentals, a credit card hold is sufficient. Our Protection Plans can cap your damage liability at 10% of replacement value.
What happens if the gear gets damaged or lost?
Damage is billed at the actual repair cost (or replacement value, whichever is less). Loss or theft is billed at current market replacement value. Our GLM Shield and Shield+ protection plans reduce your liability to 10% of replacement value. Full terms are in the Rental Terms page linked in the footer.
